some of which, such as homeopathic medicine, massage therapy, aromatherapy, certain herbal remedies, physical therapy, and acupuncture, have become widely accepted in mainstream Western society.

Increasing global awareness has also brought more of the
western world in touch with other medicinal traditions such as Indian
ayurvedic medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and herbal remedies native to exotic climates.

What Is Alternative Medicine

There
are many people that are constantly looking for means other than
conventional medicines which will help them find relief and alleviation
from many of the problems that affect them, which provokes the question what is alternative medicine.
Simply put, alternative medicine refers to any type of medicines that
are not the standard and conventional medicines that are used in the
normal course of medical treatment. Also, the answer to what is
alternative medicine is that it also includes many other medical
practices such as those that are not from Europe, and also those that
are not found in the western world and that these medical practices are
actually new approaches to treating patients.

Other Than Conventional Medicines

Thus, you may consider alternative medicine
to even be the combining of conventional medicine with those that are
considered as being alternative medicines, and the fact of the matter
is that with better research facilities and more findings being
unearthed every so often, you can now answer the question what is
alternative medicine by including means of treating ailments with means
other than conventional ones that include acupuncture, naturopathy,
homeopathy, and even osteopathy as being the major components of
alternative medicines.

Another
answer that should satisfy the question of what is alternative
medicines is that these medicines are meant to act holistically rather
than simply find the cause of a particular ailment and then attempt to
remove the problem. Thus, with alternative medicines, the entire person
is considered important and it is not merely providing a means to
alleviate the problem, which means taking into account emotional as
well as spiritual factors as well.

There
is also a major difference between alternative medicines and
conventional medicines that can further provide clarification with
regard to what is alternative medicine and that is that alternative
medicines are not subject to scientific testing under clinical
conditions. Thus, there is no way of knowing whether the alternative
medicine is effective or not, though because of the growing popularity
of alternative medicines there are now more testing that are being
undertaken so as to be able to publish some concrete proof of their
efficacy.
